English in Action Speaking Class
(S.W. University - 2023)

Week 1

Fri 3 Mar 2023

I think time management went well overall, and all the activities were good to help students have a quick taste of the class and it was fun. Many were actually very nervous, I could really feel the difference between the first minutes of class, students faces and expressions were more relaxed and bright at the end. All of class leaders were very active and cheerful, keeping a really good environment while having some fun.

Week 5

Thu 30 Mar 2023

What went well:

- This week we had many improvements that I could feel!

I think we are all now very familiar with many activities using travel and stay' so we are now sharing a common language in the class, also with the students.

The presentation PPT* was good, and I think it helped students understand quickly the activities and also for class leaders to give clearer instructions. Also, on day 2 for the last presentations, I really liked that the students were able to travel and stay twice, so that they could listen to others and then try again, and therefore improve in the way they were presenting! I think I would like to implement this method for one of our next classes as well! Also, having the target language sheet for each pair of students helped a lot in this week!

What did not went well:

For day 2, I came really late, about 2 minutes after the lesson had already started, so I was lost on what we needed to do, and I really appreciated the big sisters who helped me get to work fast. I think arriving early is really important, even if you are not the one leading the class, because it helps you get mentally prepare for the class, Because I was late, it took me a while to get back to reality of being in the class and having to assist our little sisters, I am afraid they even noticed I was a bit lost at first. At some of the activities, some of the students get along well enough to talk and discuss more, but one pair was working separately a lot, even though I encouraged them to do it together; even their final recipes and drawings were slightly different, as if they could not get into agreement on one unique recipe, and were working more individually.

Having the target language sheet for each pair of students helped a lot in this week. However, a few students in my group wouldn't care much about it, maybe because they already felt like using the target language and I could listen to them using it. But usually students follow each other in the same group, so if they see their other classmates not looking at the target language sheet, they will probably be shy to look at it too.

I also think some examples, like a picture of how their final drawing should look, would have helped a lot.

What can I do better:

- Trying my best not to be late again.

Week 3

Fri 17 Mar 2023

Day 1 Tuesday

For this day, me and HJ were the class leaders and there were many things we realized, and also many things that fortunately went okay.

We had a little inconvenient at the beginning of the class, that we were not having the enough handouts for all the students, so HJ had to run and get it while I would introduce the class, for which I was quite nervous. Overall time management in our lesson plan was a bit overlooked, since we did not considered enough time to explain each task, but I also think we did not think of easier ways to explain the task, and we got a very good feedback from our peers that we should rather use more pictures and less texts in our PPT so I think that really helped us for the day 2. Beside that, for being our first class I think it went out well. Probably from listening to each group at each task I am afraid to say I was not very sure students were REALLY using the expression they had to for this week's focus, which was giving advice and asking information. I had the feeling students were focusing more on finishing the tasks rather than actually practice the intended language, but it was not like that in all the cases. But overall it was good to keep them busy, and talking in the class, and I think it was okay. I think maybe our planned tasks could seem complicated, but in reality it was only the way to explain them. I think this first week really helped us so that in the next week we can plan better the PPT and how to explain quickly and easily each task. Overall I was very happy at the end of each class day. I want to do better in the PTT and explaining quickly and easily each taks.

Day 2 Thursday

For this day we definitely improved in our PPT and in explaining each task quickly, so we did not have much problem with time management but the tasks themselves took a while in completing so we actually ended the class a few minutes later but it was okay, and students looked also very happy and satisfied with their final results. I also listened more of the expressions of the week's focus among students, and I am very gratefull that big sisters were also helping in the best way their little sisters. What we still need to improve I think is to be better prepared with the materials, because also for this day, we had another inconvenient with one of the materials, so again I had to start the class while HJ was printing the needed handouts. I think for next tasks, we will be more experienced and prepare better, and I hope we can also keep with what we did good. I was very satisfied as well with the results of this class, I am very curious to read others' reflections, and learn more. Thank you everyone for all your efforts, advices and encouragement.

Week 6

Sat April 8th 2023

What went well:

-This week went so quickly, especially tuesday class felt a very "relaxed" class, however, even as group leader it was very busy to prepare for it, and also after it. I can't imagine the class leaders. But good thing is this class really helped students get more relaxed, get closer, enjoy the class, of course they always do, but tuesday was different in a good way Smile But reflecting overall I am not very sure if students were able to use much of the target language, but they definitely had a lot of chances to speak a lot!!! This week I must boast I felt very happy and proud with the results of all my little sisters!! I can see a lot of improvement in their interaction and also in their speaking confidence as they get to know each other more and get used to every class speaking tasks!!! Definitely I felt closer with them this week, because we took many videos, and pics and laughed together a lot!! I felt they were also more confident to talk, to ask, to follow, to interact with all.

What did not go well:

- Well, as I mentioned before, the TL of this week was probably not very much used. It doesn't mean students didn't talk, but in particular, being objective, I am not sure if the goal of this week was achieved, in terms of Syllabus. I also think mixing this kind of fun tasks with a FORMAL target language is hard, or does not match well. All tasks are meant to scaffold the final task, and the use of the TL, but personally in thursday's last class task, telling students to present all in a formal language almost felt like a bucket of cold water!! Also we had no TL sheet for each table, tasks were keeping us all so busy we didn't even realize until the week was done. I guess... it's also part of not making using a formal language such of a 'boring' thing for students with these activities, but maybe we can reinforce better the use of the TL next time Smile

What I can do better:

I still need to improve a lot in providing good feedback in good ways to students, but I could feel more confidence also in myself this week. I need to be more aware of TL, and overall the lesson plan. Compared to the very first class, I am also now letting students do more by themselves, but I suddenly felt more as an observer, not even a help or guide, I mean last week, but as I said, this week I felt more confident, more interactive and close to my little sisters!! I think my next step is really helping them improve by providing them with Feedback in good ways! Embarrassed I think I am a bit afraid of making mistakes, but I am thinking, mistakes lead us to improve too, so I will just go for it next week!

Week 9

For this week, we had the theme of Jobs/interviews, and the target language was formal.

What went well:

- Specially day 2, helped with more confidence little sisters to use formal language, to complete activities and provide them feedback.

- Better awareness in the whole lesson plan tasks - I felt I am now very aware and got used to this task based lesson plans, I felt I understood better how each task is always going to help students achieve a goal and specially help them for next tasks and for the very last task! So for every task, now instead of only thinking “lets finish this task for now” I would now think “this task is for them to do something with it later, so how can I help my lil sisters get the best of this task and scaffold for coming tasks”. Also having all the interventions for both AR help a lot in having a quick look on the whole class (through the PPT opening slide) and be more aware if students understand the instructions (through the mini checklists), and being more aware of target language and its use in class (through the TL handouts). We have been improving significantly in many ways I can tell.

What did not went well:

Due to the complex tasks this week some instructions may have been a bit confusing, and students did asked for clarifications quite a few times, but we managed well to not make it a big obstacle for the flow of the class by communicating and asking among GL and CL. I think that also there were big changes applied to the lesson plan in the last minute that made it hard for everyone to keep the flow smoothly, but it was also understandable, I think these things always happen, is good to have plans, however there can always be changes.

What I can do better next time:

At the end of 2nd day, a student asked me about speaking assigment, if she would need some material we worked in class, so I was not sure about it. I should prepare better in next classes to know better about the Speaking assigment as well.
